I've never been a fan of tofu, but I recently ordered it at a chinese restaurant and it was wonderful!

What do you do with it? Can you grill it? Fry it??Any good tofu recipes? Can you grill it?
SWEET-SOUR TOFU

Ingredients:

250 gm tofu, cut into cubes

1 green chili, sliced

1 large onion, finely chopped

3-4 cloves garlic

1 tbsp vinegar

1/2-1 tsp soy sauce

1 tbsp cornflour

1/2 tsp cumin

1 cup tomato ketchup

A few tsp chili/garlic sauce (optional)

2 tbsp oil

Serves: 4

Method: Put a thick-bottomed pan onto gentle heat. Pour in oil. After a few seconds, add chili and onion. Saut茅 till the onion begins to brown. Add garlic and cumin. As soon as the cumin begins to darken, add ketchup, chili or garlic sauce, vinegar and soy sauce. Raise the heat and let the mixture come to a gentle boil.

Meanwhile, mix the cornflour to a smooth paste with a few tablespoons of water. Add it to the simmering sauce along with as much water (probably 1/2-3/4 cup) as you need to make a smooth consistency.

Cook for a few minutes more, stirring continuously, and then add the tofu cubes. Simmer for another few minutes.

To make the dish more substantial, add boiled peas, potatoes, or even a combination of vegetables.

GOOD-HEALTH TOFU SALAD

Ingredients:

250 gm tofu, cut into small cubes

1 fresh medium-sized lettuce

1 large cucumber

1 large capsicum

1 apple

1 orange

A handful of sprouts

4 lemons

5 tsp honey

Salt and pepper to taste

Serves: 4-6

Method: Tear the lettuce into bite-sized pieces. Peel and cut cucumber into cubes. Chop capsicum into tiny bits. Peel and chop apple into small pieces. Peel an orange, remove the tough outer threads and as many seeds as you can. Cut orange into bits. Put these ingredients in a bowl. Add sprouts and tofu.

Prepare the dressing with lemon juice and honey. Add salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss well. Serve immediately.

For an interesting variation, add pineapple instead of an orange. You could also add boiled potatoes.

TOFU-VEGETABLE BAKE

Ingredients:

500 gm tofu

2 cups mushrooms, sliced

1 tsp honey or sugar

1 large capsicum, sliced

4 onions, sliced

4-5 cloves garlic, finely sliced or crushed

1/2 kg tomatoes, unpeeled, pureed

1 pack tomato puree

A generous pinch of oregano

Salt, pepper, green or red chili to taste

Grated cheese

2 tbsp oil

Serves: 6

Method: Place tofu on a large plate or chopping board, tilted at an angle that will best allow excess moisture to drain away. Keep for 30 minutes, and then slice thickly, lightly butter a baking dish and put the tofu slices in it in layers.

Sauce: Gently heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or karhai or wok. Add the onions, using some of the green stems too. Add garlic, saut茅 for a few minutes. Add tomato puree and seasoning. Add 12 cup water. Cook for 10 minutes, or till the sauce has a thick, glossy consistency. Add mushrooms, cook for another 10 minutes. Take off the fire and stir in honey or sugar.

Pour the sauce over the tofu. Top with capsicum and cheese. Bake in a preheated oven (3500 F/1800C) for 20-30 minutes or till the dish is heated through and the cheese has meltAny good tofu recipes? Can you grill it?

Hundreds! Tofu is a very versatile food. Check out the link I post in the sources. It has recipes from Good Eats (Fillet O'Fu, No Guilt Caesar, Moo-Less Chocolate Pie, Tall %26amp; Tangy Tofu Thangy). The Moo-Less Chocolate Pie is so good!

Yes, but I suggest marinating it first. It's way too plain otherwise. It holds pretty much any flavor you throw at it so experiment.

';What do you do with it?';

Anything you want! It is forgiving and versitile. It's also not all that expensive so if you mess up you're not out much money.

';Can you grill it?';

Oh yeah! Grill+tofu+teriyaki=happy tummies!

';Fry it??';

Yep! Try agadashi tofu at a Japanese restaurant some time. I can't reccomend a recipe as I have yet to find one that I like. Try it though, you'll leave thinking ';I can't believe it's tofu!';.
Roll it in cornflour with ground black pepper or garlic pepper and fry it very hot until crispy.
Grilled Tofu with Miso Sauce

12 ounces fresh tofu (not silken)

2 Japanese eggplants

2 green bell peppers, seeded

8 large mushroom caps

Marinade

1/2 C miso (red, barley or Hatcho)

1 C red wine

1 T red wine vinegar

1 T honey

2 T sesame oil

1/2 C olive oil

2 cloves garlic, mashed

2 T chopped green onions

1 T roasted sesame seeds or tahini paste

1/2 tsp. black pepper

dash of Tabasco庐 Sauce or hot chili oil

Garnish

1 toasted nori sheet, ground

Serves 4

Drain and chill tofu to firm it (To do this, drain it of the salted water it was packaged in, cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours or overnight.).

Cut tofu into 2 inch cubes and let soak for a couple of minutes in a bowl of hot water. Pierce each cube with a flat bamboo skewer and place on paper towels to drain. Cut eggplants, skin on, into 3/4 inch thick slices. Cut seeded green peppers into 2 inch triangles.

Alternate the tofu squares with the eggplant, mushrooms, and peppers on 4 long bamboo skewers (soak the skewers in water in advance), and place in a shallow pan.

Combine all remaining ingredients, except nori and pur茅e. Pour into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, then pour over tofu-vegetables in the pan and marinate for an hour, turning the skewers from time to time.

On a charcoal grill or under a broiler, grill tofu skewers about 3 minutes on each side. Sprinkle with ground nori.
Slice it thin and shallow fry it until it has gone golden then stir fry with vegies of your choice and maybe some black bean sauce. Careful with the hot oil.

Good luck.

You can do whatever you want with it but I find that fried or baked tofu has a spongy texture, and I'm not fond of that.

I normally throw tofu into a stir-fry, or I will make a package of vegetables and sauce (Green Giant has some teriyaki and szechuan vegetables I especially like to use). While the vegetables heat up I cut the tofu into cubes, put it in a bowl, and then pour the veggies and sauce over the tofu. It warms up the tofu without making it feel like a sponge in my mouth.
fry firm tofu and dip in a mixture of soy sauce and lemon juice. serve with rice. simple and really tasty.
Tofu is bland so it is the perfect food to absorb flavours. Toss it in flour with spices of your choice, then lightly fry and serve with salad or stir fried vegetables. Add a little sesame oil over the top. Tofu will absorb any flavours making it the perfect meal, everytime I cook it it tastes different. Have fun.
mix it with any kind of meat and then take out the tofu.
yes , in uk we tend to fry it in vegetable oil, and we can buy it readily marinated also.some like to oven bake it.use soy sauce to season. accompany it with green salad and enjoy..Sean
